Don’t Say Merry Christmas

Standing in the parlor is a pine tree
Dressed in bows and sparkling silver tails
Twinkling like a clear December midnight sky
and waiting for, something more…

Carolers are practicing their carols;
Santa Claus is warming up the sleigh,
But till the Christmas angel sits atop the tree,
it’s still not here, so my dear…

We’ll bring out the familiar decorations;
we’ll deck the halls as decked as they can be,
Sing “Hark the Herald Angels Sing,” but still it won’t be Christmas,
‘Til daddy puts the angel on the tree.

Let every little hand hang something special;
Sally hangs the holly every year.
The golden balls and silver bells, then Daddy brings the angel,
and then we know that Christmas time is here.

The bows will be tied to the boughs of the tree
then I give my helper elves a yuletide speech,
if we would retain but a single candy cane,
hang them on the branches little Tommy can’t reach.

Santa Claus is coming down the chimney,
and soon you may be sitting on his knee,
but even Old Saint Nick will not be saying “Merry Christmas”
‘Til daddy puts the angel on the tree.

The angels this day play the hymns on their harps,
while a host of holy voices sweetly sing.
And I have heard tell when you hear a Christmas bell it means another angel has been given her wings.

So when you hear the carolers a calling,
and snow is touching everything you see,
don’t say “Merry Christmas…” still it’s not quite Christmas, don’t say (shhhh),
‘Til daddy puts the angel on the tree.
